  Beginning Orchestra   

Mr. Robert Harrell, Conductor

 

The Oak Beginning Orchestra offers instruction for students who have one year or less of string instrument experience. This class introduces and reinforces fundamental performance techniques in violin, viola, cello, and double bass as well as basic musicianship and music theory. Students with previous string knowledge who wish to begin instruction on a second string instrument may also enroll. School instruments are provided on a limited basis. Performances include the annual winter, spring, and End of the Year concerts.

Prerequisites:

  • Enrollment open to all students

  • Grade level: 6 - 8

  • No Experience necessary

 Advanced Orchestra 

Mr. Robert Harrell, Conductor

 

The Oak Advanced Orchestra emphasizes advanced ensemble techniques as well as individual musicianship skills (vibrato, shifting, etc.). Students are strongly encouraged to provide their own instruments, since school instruments are limited. Performances include the winter, All District, spring, Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association Festival, and End of the Year concerts.

Prerequisites: 

  • At least two years previous string experience (or discretion of director)

  • Proficiency of the following major scales: C, G, D, A, E, B, F, B-flat, E-flat, A-flat, D-flat

  • Solo demonstrating technique and musicianship

  • Private lessons highly recommended

  • Grade level: 6 - 8

  Beginning Band

The Oak Beginning Band offers instruction in beginning ensemble technique as well as individual musicianship skills and theory. Emphasis is placed on fundamental techniques in woodwind, brass, and percussion performance practice. The Beginning Band performs at the winter, spring, and the End of the Year concerts.

Prerequisites:

  • Less than one year or no previous experience needed.

  • Grade level: 6 - 8

 Intermediate Band

The Oak Intermediate Band offers instruction in intermediate and developing ensemble technique as well as individual musicianship skills. Students are strongly encouraged to provide their own instruments, since school instruments are limited. This group focuses on the

performance of traditional band literature as well as the practice of music theory and music history. Performances include the annual winter and spring concerts, the All-District performance, and the End of the Year concert.

  • At least 1 year previous band/ensemble experience (or discretion of director)

  • A solo demonstrating technique and musicianship

  • Private lessons highly recommended

  • Grade level: 6 – 8

 Advanced Band

Students are strongly encouraged to provide their own instruments, since school instruments are limited. This group focuses on the performance of traditional band literature as well as the practice of music theory and music history. Performances include the annual winter and spring concerts, the All-District performance, the Southern California School Band Orchestra Association Festival., and the End of the Year concert.

 Jazz Band

The Oak Jazz Band offers instruction in advanced ensemble technique as well as individual musicianship skills. Students are strongly encouraged to provide their own instruments, since school instruments are limited. This group focuses on the performance of traditional jazz band literature as well as the practice of music theory, music history, and improvisation. Performances include the annual winter and spring concerts, the All-District performance, Southern California Jazz festivals, Monterey NGJ Festival, Reno Jazz Festival, and various community performances.

  • At least two years previous band/ensemble experience (or discretion of director)

  • Proficiency of the following major scales: C, F, B-flat, E-flat, A-flat, D-flat (C-sharp), G-flat (F-sharp), G, D, A, E, B, chromatic

  • A solo demonstrating technique and musicianship

  • Private lessons highly recommended
